Carve the Mark is a fantasy, sci-fi story which takes place in a different universe. One, where colonies live on seperate planets. These colonies have all got very different cultures and values. All colonies, however, are powered by a force called the current. The current flows through every living thing and every person who lives in this planatery sytem. Everyone is given a currentgift by the current. Currentgifts are unique powers which are individual to each person. Very few people gain the currentgift of futuresight, allowing them to see the futures and reveal the fates of other people: they are called Oracles. Fates are futures that are set by the current, so they cannot be altered. Not many people have fates, but those who do must forever live with their fates. The story follows two completely different teenagers, each from different colonies, both have a fate binding them together and both plan to topple the king who dominates over the Shotet people.

 

Veronica Roth also wrote the Divergent Series, even though I personaly prefer Carve The Mark to Divergent. The friendships and story telling are beautifully represented, it made me really fall in love with the characters and their journey. The complex world-building was really intriguing and fun to discover. The plot itself is well developed and kept me gripped for the entire length of the book. Truly a powerful read!
